Hey, it’s Salva! If there’s one hike I know inside out, it’s the Santa Ana Volcano. I’ve hiked it over 1,000 times in the last 10 years, and I’ve seen it all—people running to the top like it’s a CrossFit challenge, others struggling because they forgot their asthma inhaler, and even encounters with some of El Salvador’s most beautiful (and harmless) snakes.
To make sure you have the best experience, here’s my ultimate list of 10 crucial things you need to know before taking on El Salvador’s most famous volcano.
Pro Tip: Want the best experience? Book directly with us to avoid extra fees and save money: Santa Ana Volcano Hike Tour.
🛌🏼 1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep (Don’t Party Too Hard the Night Before!)
Look, I get it—El Tunco’s nightlife is tempting. But trust me, you’ll regret partying hard when you’re gasping for air halfway up the volcano.
The hike isn’t extreme, but it’s steady uphill, and those last steps to the summit? Way easier when you’re not running on fumes. So, do yourself a favor—get a solid night’s rest and save the celebration for after you’ve conquered the volcano.
🍉 2. Fuel Up with a Solid Breakfast
Your body needs fuel for the climb, so don’t skip breakfast! Go for something with protein and good carbs—eggs, fruit, oatmeal, or a smoothie. Avoid heavy, greasy food (you don’t want to feel sluggish on the way up).
If you’re staying in El Tunco, it’s tricky to find places open before 5:30 AM, no worries—we always stop for breakfast in a place where you can also get snacks, water, or a quick bite before the hike.

3. Wear the Right Gear (Flip-Flops Are a No-Go!)
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people try to hike in flip-flops. Don’t be that person.
👟 Best choice: Hiking boots
👟 Good choice: Running shoes (Nike, Adidas, etc.)
🚫 Bad choice: Sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes.
🎒Backpack: Small backpack to carry your water, sunscreent, snacks, etc.
Also, pack comfortable clothes and a light jacket—it’s way cooler up there than in Surf City or San Salvador City.
4. Bring Snacks (Trust Me, You’ll Want Them)
Even if you have breakfast, hiking takes energy. I recommend packing:
🍌 Fruits: Bananas (for potassium), apples, or oranges for hydration.
🥜 Trail Mix & Nuts: Almonds, cashews, and dried fruit give you lasting energy.
🍫 Granola or Energy Bars: Perfect for a quick boost without the sugar crash.
If you forget snacks, don’t stress—we stop at a gas station before the hike.
5. Hydration is Key – Bring Enough Water!
Dehydration = dizziness, headaches, and a miserable hike. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person (preferably 2L).
Pro tip: If you like cold water, freeze half of your bottle the night before so it stays fresh longer.
6. Listen to Your Guide (Seriously, We Know What We’re Doing)
When we arrive at Cerro Verde National Park, I’ll give you the rundown on what to expect. Local guides and police officers will also give safety instructions, and if there’s anything extra you need to know, I’ll translate for you.
The goal? Make sure everyone gets up and down safely while having an amazing time.
7. Be Ready for the Altitude
Santa Ana Volcano stands at 2,381 meters (7,812 feet). Some people feel the altitude—shortness of breath, dizziness, or lightheadedness.
If you have asthma, heart conditions, or are sensitive to high altitudes, bring your medication and take it slow. The good news? The hike is not rushed—we go at a steady pace so everyone can make it.
8. The Weather Can Change FAST
One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s foggy with strong winds. Be prepared for anything:
🌤 Sunny day? Wear sunscreen and a hat.
🌬 Windy? A light jacket will help.
🌧 Rainy? A poncho or rain jacket is handy.
I’ve hiked this volcano in perfect conditions and in crazy storms—it’s always an adventure!
9. Respect Nature & Leave No Trace
This should go without saying, but:
🚯 DON’T leave trash behind—pack it out.
🚷 Stay on the trail—it’s safer for you and better for the environment.
🐍 If you see wildlife, admire it from a distance—don’t disturb it.
Santa Ana is a beautiful, living volcano—let’s keep it that way!
10. Enjoy the Crater View – It’s Worth It!
Once you reach the summit, you’ll see the famous turquoise crater lake—one of the most incredible sights in El Salvador. Take your time, enjoy the view, and snap some photos.
But heads up:
📸 Drones are not allowed without a special permit.
⏳ We have a limited time at the top before we start heading back down.
After 1,000+ hikes, I still get excited every time I see that view—so take it in!
