Santa Ana Volcano, the kind of the hills in El Salvador

Santa Ana Volcano, located on the west side of El Salvador, close to Guatemala and about 2 hours and 30 minutes from El Tunco Beach, it is one of the highlights when people visit the smallest country in Central America.

And maybe the most skipped country because of it famous infamous online reputation, despite of the bad media, El Salvador is making its way in the tourism industry.

Every year, El Salvador is doubling the numbers of tourists who decide to come to El Pulgarcito de América. Also people call it: the country of short distances, which makes it the perfect destination for backpackers seeking adventure activities.

Santa Ana Volcano or Ilamatepec Volcano in Nahuat, which means Hill’s father is visited by hundreds of people every week. With a nice weather (Much cooler than El Tunco) and with a perfect view of Coatepeque Lake, Izalco Volcano, Sonsonate and the ocean make it the perfect day trip.

Santa Ana Volcano Hike

We departure at 8:00 am from El Tunco beach, if you are in other beaches we pick up you earlier, we take the Litoral main highway in directions to La Libertad city, then we take the road that connects San Salvador State with La Libertad, it takes around 1 hour 40 minutes to get to our first stop, a viewpoint of Coatepeque Lake where from there we have a perfect view of this amazing volcanic lake. From here we see for the first time what our main objective of the day will be, the Santa Ana Volcano.

We arrive at Cerro Verde National before 11:00am, we listen to police and local guides indications and from there the adventure starts.

We descend Cerro Verde hill and right after we start hiking the Santa Ana Volcano, it’s about 2 hours average to get to the top of the volcano.

The faster you get to the top, the more time you are going to have to spend up there. Some clients have done it in 50 minutes, it all depends on your physical condition.

You have 2 hours to get to the top so no rush, we do always recommend to take it easy and enjoy mother nature.

There is a police officer ahead and another one at the end of the group.

Once we make it to the top of Santa Ana Volcano we can enjoy a sulfur green lagoon in the middle of the crater. The color is a result of a mix of bacteria and sulfur. most of the time as you are getting closer to the crater you can start smiling the characteristic smell of sulfur.

Also, on you right side hand you can view the amazing Coatepeque Lake as well as the Izalco volcano.

We come down in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
