About this tour
Baby sea turtle release in La Libertad, El Salvador.
What is a baby sea turtle release tour?
A baby sea turtle release tour is a guided tour of the Surf City Area that takes participants to see and hold free-swimming Pacific turtles, participants learn the importance of sea turtle and how they can help them.
When are sea turtle season in El Salvador?
From August to February. Sea turtles arrive on the beaches of El Salvador to lay their eggs every year between July and December, it takes approximately 50 days for the turtle eggs to hatch and then they can be released into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of La Libertad.
Where are these baby turtles released?
We have team up with two different local Non-Profit Organizations that work the entire year taking care of the baby sea turtles, adult turtles that have been wounded by fish boats or other predators.
These two NPO are located in La Libertad area, it will depends on their availability where the tour is taken.
How many eggs sea turtles hatch?
On average between 70 to 100 eggs per hatch, temperature will dictate if males or females are born.
The hotter the temperature of the sand is the chances of giving birth to female sea turtle are higher. Anything above 32 degrees celcius would do the magic here.
If the temperature is below 28 degrees celcius more male sea turtle are going to be born.
The average temperature turtle protection centers try to keep the baby sea turtle nests is around 30 degrees celcius.
What else do these Non Profit Organizations do for sea turtle protection?
There are still people who collect sea turtle eggs to sell on the black market. These Non-Profit Organizations try to buy as many eggs as possible from these people and then take them to the nests and take care of them until they hatch.
In this way, it prevents more turtle eggs from reaching the black market and thus obtain a greater number of hatchlings each season.
what type of sea turtle do they release?
Most of the time the sea turtle family that is released is the golfina also know as Olive Ridley. This sea turtle can weight up to 100 pounds.
